Behind The Art: Unfollow The Leader

The new "Unfollow The Leader" Cultship graphic has received a great response since we released it this week on Instagram.

For this installment of BTA, I wanted to tell the story behind the latest graphic, (which goes somewhere we usually avoid: Politics) and shed light on how it all came together.

During the campaign last year my brother - Tim, an accomplished artist / illustrator, created this as a personal piece and uploaded it to his Instagram account.

There were many Trump caricatures floating around the internet at that time, but this one to me was far superior (and yes I can admit my obvious bias) but truthfully, I thought this image perfectly captured the bizarre angst and irrational temperament Trump has become known for and has began to normalize as POTUS. The way his face is twisted up like a psychopathic muscle spasm along with the stumpy finger pointed to the sky to me is easily the best visual representation of the current situation.  The crazed, furious look on his face is like a mirror for how many people feel about him. I imagine this is the look on his face right before he uses that finger to tap "Tweet" and send a string of bombs across the sphere.

That is what makes a portrait artist exceptional, the ability to tell the story through the expressive mark making and then forming a likeness from it. Genius!

I have always wanted to collaborate with my brother on some kind of art work. I figured it would happen at some point, but what was it going to BE? What better subject than one we have equally strong opinions about?

The rest of the design speaks for itself. Trump has become the Twitter president, using the platform to create policies from a feed of unstable rants and brain farts. To instruct people to "unfollow" him also has meaning beyond the relationship to social media. As we have witnessed in towns across the US, the America that supports Trump reads the hate and anger and then projects it out towards their neighbors and fellow Americans.  His position may be "Leader" but that doesn't mean we have to follow his shit example.

SO here it is, in all of it's glory... to become skateboards, stickers and t-shirts for the youth and the young hearted. Look for the release coming soon on the Cultship Store.

Thanks, Timmy, for letting me use the drawing for this. Love ya, Bro!
